What up gearheadz, I am currently in the market for an air compressor. I have been eyeing and ingersollrand 60 gal 18.1 CFM electric stationary compressor from Northen Tool & Equipment for about 875.  Most of the reviews are great but i would like to know if any of you guys have any other recomendations or experiences with the brand.  My budget is around 8-900 for a good one for my garage that i can run a DA Sander with and eventualy paint.

piping

lots of people are using plastic plumbing pipe now around here , I myself have used copper plumbing pipe . with a burst of 300 psi I have never had problems . not sure its legal in a comercial shop but have seen the plastic stuff in comercial applications

Satisfaction comes when you can say "I built that"

air line plumbing

I have a 38 cfm 120 gal but you don't need that big unless you are sandblasting. But i plumbed it from a garden shed all on it's own to get rid of the noise. With most of my shop i piped it with metal and now i have rust problems so i am going to plumb the rest of the shop with air brake line 1/2" plastic the fittings are pricey but should be worth it for the easy install and clean.I run a 60 gal tank in my one shop from the 120 and i have a 20 gal in my paint shop so i never run low but if you have large volume you don't need big cfm output.

I need s new air compressor

I need a new air compressor too. I am tired of the noise with my pretend 5 hp from Home Depot. I am seriously considering (dont laugh now) a large slow speed compressor mounted on a windmill. Then piped inside. .With sufficient volume and a saftety valve I should have enough quiet air for whatever i want. We never have more than a day or so a year with no wind. Besides it willl be a fun build and I can pretend to be going green. I often think when I am running my air powered die grinder how completely ridiculous it is to be sitting here with that tiny thing running it with a supposedly 5 hp electric powered compressor. Sort of like killing mosquitos with a sledge hammer.

Besides my wife is from Dutch heritage so that should make her happy as well when I say " Look what I made you , honey!"

I would like somthing that is

I would like somthing that is two stage and can hold at least 18 cfm at full and will handle a DA Sander with no problems.  I plan to do some painting later on and i don't want to be limited.  i will use a dryer and a filter also.

Understanding is the first step

First thing to do is to do that audit. Lay it out on paper. 18cfm should be enough for 2 people working simulatneously with most tools, but you don't want to dump that much cash on 'should be'.  then go over the work area and think clearly about how you're going to get that air from A to B. Air plumbing kits don't cost that much, but they save you a lot in lost air by using large diameter pipe and non restrictive bends and connectors. Are you going to want more than one output? you need to then consider where the pump is going to live, and how are you going to live with the noise. I helped a guy build an enclosure for his vented with fans to the outside because he couldn't take the noise ... only to have his neighbours file a complaint about the noise with the city. Wound up putting all kinds of time and money into noise abatement on that. If you put it outside, you have to consider vandalism and theft.  Hey, if they'll break into abandoned homes to steal copper pipe and risk electrocution to steal live transformers ... your big noisy compressor is like a 10 point buck.

Lots to consider, not the least of which is $$$

Before fixating on one compressor, ask them about how easy it is to maintain that model, and if it's US or Chinese parts. I say that for one reason ... Chinese electric motors are frequently rated by electric consumption and not output. I've got a 3hp motor on my compressor ... that's really only about 2. but it consumes 3hp of electricity, so that's how they rated it.  If it breaks, can they fix it? Can anyone? Are you stuck waiting for parts or is it a stock item? That's always the Achilies heel of chinese makes. they're disposable. Well, nearly a grand isn't what I call disposable.

It might be worth your effort to take that finished up audit paper and head to the local industrial compressor shop. You might find they've got used screw type waiting for a buyer. There's lots of places going out of business right now, and lots of tooling looking for new homes.

Have you audited your actual

Have you audited your actual air requirements? Your CFM and duty cycle? Do you predict growth in the next years? Will you need an air dryer?
